The Beluga whale, also known as the white whale is a small whale that lives in the arctic oceans. Belugas use the protrusion on the front of their head, also known as a melon to echo-locate. The can make a wide variety of chirps and clicks, giving them the nickname, “the canary of the ocean”. The beluga population in the Cook Inlet in Alaska is protected by the Endangered Species Act. Only about 300 remain.
